If Today is All I Have - New Book from FHDI Patient Linda Nordyke Hamilton

“I am happiest when I wake up breathing.  I am acutely aware of the exchange of air through the lungs, the pulsating movement of blood in a vein, the billions of electric impulses that form a thought in the mind.  Life is an amazing gift.

Certainly simple numbers cannot define us, yet the statistics that describe our lives have a story to tell.  Here are a few of mine:

  • 128 Hospitalizations
  • 6.75 average days per hospitalization
  • 37,500 shots
  • Two organ transplants
  • 69-74 Pills a day
  • 2 heart attacks
  • 3 cardiac arrests
  • 3 strokes
  • 250+ grand mall seizures and about 150 focal seizures
  • 12,000 laser blasts to the eye
  • 53 inches of incisions, 255 stitches and 137 titanium staples

When it comes down to it, however, there is really only one statistic that matters: I have been given one more day

Information matters and information is available.  That’s the reason I am so excited about the new Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute.  This institute will save thousands of lives just through education.  On top of that, it will offer first-rate state-of-the-art care that will help many, many others avoid the types of complications that I’ve had.

Thank you all for being a wonderful, safe, and Christ-centered place to spend so much of my time as well as being a true model of the best a hospital can aspire to.  Your current and future patients are truly blessed to be in your care!”

LINDA NORDYKE HAMBLETON was diagnosed with juvenile-onset diabetes (type I diabetes mellitus) at the age of six. Doctors gave her to age twenty-five to live. With dreams, pain, laughter, and tears, she exceeded their prediction by more than twenty years. Truly a model of physical, mental, and spiritual human survival, Linda writes from the heart with honesty and experience. It is a message of hope to all individuals and their loved ones who suffer from the chronic condition called “life.”
